Sometimes in the academic environment, situations arise where the authorship of a work is mistakenly attributed to another scientist. This can happen due to a coincidence in the author's first and last names or due to inaccuracies in the author's details. To prevent this problem, a unique identifier for scientists was created – ORCID. In this article, we will look at what ORCID is, what functions it performs, and what advantages it has for modern researchers.

What is ORCID?
ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) is a unique system created to identify researchers and their research. The platform allows you to create a free profile where authors can provide information about themselves and their research. The information provided on the ORCID platform includes:
- short biography
- contact details
- first and last name (preferably in different forms)
- education
- current place of work, as well as previous places of work (optional)
- information about grants received, participation in projects, etc.
- keywords related to the researcher's field of activity
This profile can be accessed using an ORCID iD, which consists of four groups of four digits separated by hyphens (e.g. 0000-0009-2008-0099), which comply with ISO 27729 (International Standard Name Identifier).
The first 15 digits ensure the uniqueness of each researcher's profile, and the last (16th) digit is a checksum. ORCID iD is always presented as a link: https://orcid.org/xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx. This identifier links the researcher to their profile, which displays all their scientific achievements. It is used to confirm authorship of work when applying for grants or collaborations, thus confirming transparent scientific activity.
What are the benefits of ORCID for researchers?
- Publication management. The system provides effective management of publications, automatically adding them to the profile from the publisher's page, manual entry via search or import, etc.
- Unique identifier. The ORCID profile provides a permanent identifier that is unique to each researcher and allows them to be distinguished from other scientists with similar names or surnames.
- Professional information. Your ORCID profile can include information about your place of work and affiliation, as well as details about your place of study, qualifications obtained, or participation in various organisations.
- Compliance with international standards. The ORCID platform is recognised by scientists, publishers, scientific institutions, and organisations around the world.
- Synchronisation with other systems. Another advantage of ORCID is its automatic integration with international databases, university repositories, etc. This means that information about publications, projects and funding is updated automatically.
- Reporting and analytics. Thanks to automatic synchronisation with other scientometric databases, researchers can obtain information about the number of citations of publications and their analysis, etc.
Among the vast number of scientific publications, ORCID is an indispensable tool for modern scientists, providing unique identification and facilitating the process of searching for work or authors. Thanks to its practicality, this identifier significantly increases the visibility of research and the scientist themselves in the scientific community.
